2 Operations Management in a Hospital

In all the different ways that businesses work, there has been some agreed-upon series of activities which all businesses do. These are the fun- damental concepts underlying business processes, and in this essay, we will focus on operations—the order-to-bill method. This includes all of the requirements necessary to place an order, offer service, as well as bill a customer effectively. In a clinical setting, such as the one we will ex-

amine, similar surgeries may have various names and methods, but the parallel remains the same. Owing to the type of work performed, a healthcare system is not often considered as a normal company, despite the fact that it is (Spacey, 2017). Additional processes such as distribu-

tion chain and purchasing, management, accounting, and customer support are incorporated into this system.

The healthcare business is large, with several standards and regulations to follow. The simple fact that it is centered on the preservation of hu- man life alters the entire circumstance. To maintain a feeling of decorum, physicians and other healthcare practitioners must adhere to certain agreed-upon norms of operation. Historically, hospital administrations and other related stakeholders have used enterprise resource planning strategies to maintain the smooth flow of activity in certain areas. Business process management has the ability to be beneficial in a variety of circumstances, including but not restricted to process design, process intelligence, as well as dynamic and organized process execution (Kems- ley, 2020). This synthesis of people, procedures, data, and rules enables a medical facility to succeed while adhering to legal and regulatory

obligations.

The particular action involved in operations in this context is the patient screening test, therapeutic interventions, financial activities, and/or discharge. Despite the fact that most of these procedures have been digitalized and are an upgrade over what was there in the past, there is much more progress to be made. This has been hampered by the bureaucracy which has been involved in numerous regulatory bodies, which is understandable given the need to safeguard the safety of people. The adoption of wearable technology, for instance, can help to reduce the number of times a patient has visit the clinic to have their vital signs monitored. All that is required of a patient is that they wear a gadget and sync it with their phone. The mobile applications use a shared database with the physician, allowing them to keep track of readings from their

side.

2 Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a significant growing topic in the realm of technology. It is a broad term that refers to the interconnection of de- vices equipped with specialized sensors and managed by specialized software to do certain activities. With existing network advances, most notably the arrival of 5G networks, changes, and reliance on IoT will increase (Orsino, et.al, 2017). 2 Head and neck cancer therapy is an in- stance of how IoT is used in hospitals. CYORE conducted a pilot experiment using Bluetooth-enabled measuring devices and blood pressure monitors to transmit data to a symptom tracking application, which subsequently communicates it with the doctor. The investigation enrolled 357 randomly chosen patients, and the results indicated that patients who used the app experienced fewer serious symptoms than those who persisted with routine medical appointments (Sentance, 2018). Not only would the physician be able to monitor his present patient, but he'll

also be able to collect data for future studies and to assist others.

Diabetes is another chronic condition that is wreaking havoc on sufferers worldwide. Individuals are not only stressed by the disease's conse- quences, but also by the constant requirement to be accountable for insulin ingestion in order to restore the blood's lost balance of the hor- mone. 2 At times, one may forget until it is too late, and these instances are not uncommon. Thus, the Open Artificial Pancreas System was invented. This technology not only measures the client's blood sugar level, but also delivers insulin according to the device's data. This puts it ahead of the market-leading continuous glucose monitoring device. It accomplishes this by 'closing the loop,' which entails the assessment and administration of medication. OpenAPS was started in 2015 by Dana Lewis and Scott Leibrand. They worked to improve the “Continuous Glu- cose Monitoring (CGM)” system's ability to work as it should (Econsultancy, 2019). Mechanisation of insulin administration keeps blood sugar levels in a reasonable level, so there is no risk of high blood sugar or low blood sugar. The people with the disease can now go to sleep at night and not worry about their blood sugar levels falling too low (Tyagi, S., et.al, 2016).

Linked inhalers for asthmatic patients, swallowable sensors, and wearables that can tell if people have taken their medicine (like smartwatches) are some of the other sensors and devices that have been made to help people with specific illnesses.

2 Pros and Cons

The following are some broad generalizations about the cumulative benefits of these innovations. For starters, patients can benefit from real- time reporting and tracking from their physicians while they are connected. Aside from that, there is a great deal of information gathered from clients that can be examined for future reference. Using tracking notifications and virtual medical support can be extremely beneficial for indi- viduals who have chronic conditions and live alone. Despite the fact that there are several benefits and gains in overall patient health, such ad- vances frequently come with trade-offs. One of the most difficult issues to deal with is the protection of patient information. With the wide- spread usage of Internet of Things devices, people should expect a large amount of data to be gathered, the majority of which will be private and will need to be managed, sent, stored, examined, and discarded in the safest possible manner. Data congestion and precision are also is- sues to consider, as gadgets are known to malfunction from time to time. An instance of misdiagnosis might readily emerge as a result of in- correct information. Affordability is obviously a worry, given that access to basic health services is already a challenge in this country (Farahani, B, et.al, 2018). However, even with these drawbacks, it is a no-brainer that health is more essential than personal information, which is why it is

necessary to advocate for these reforms.
