Scenario for RUA 3.
You are an emergency room nurse that has been working a long and stressful overnight shift. There has been a violent thunderstorm going on since you arrived at work, which has caused immense chaos at the hospital. Every available room is full of patients with complaints of severe pain, vomiting, and broken bones from car accidents. The waiting room is full of concerned parents and family members wanting test results and answers. As if this shift has not been stressful enough, the storm has knocked out the power in the hospital and the network is now down. Usually, there is a downtime computer that stores emergency data, but you discover that it was somehow unplugged. Now, the entire staff must manually keep track of patients’ data and the charge nurse begins using a white board to do so since you cannot access electronic records. The hospital staff is doing their best to care for patients and keep track of their data amidst the chaos. However, you realize that the wrong medication was administered to two of your patients because they were written incorrectly on the board.
